Bakersfield Red Lion Hotel
My experience with this hotel is the best case study of why you should first check "Yelp" to book a room. In mid-January 2011, I attended a conference in Bakersfield at the last minute. The rooms at the Doubletree were all booked so I went next to the Rosedale Hotel (new name of the former Red Lion). The lobby is spotless and updated. The friendly desk staff was professional and well turned-out in a beautiful uniforms. The rates were in the low € 70 / s per night, seemed reasonable. I booked a room.

Room was outdated, but nice and clean. I had the service call to the sliding glass door, which was in its tracks (later to fix it was probably broken in. ... and the door deadbolt was broken with signs of burglary around the door jamb. Someone had either been attacked or had slain there are, the door broken down.)

The courtyard-style buildings are deemed to be included with CARDLOCK doors leading to the parking lots. Someone stopped propping the doors open. Because the hotel seems to attract foul mouth, bad-ass gansta types (hanging around in the parking lots, junk, peering into cars, picking fights) I was not thrilled by this. The layout provides a lot of lurking in the shadows. As a fan of personal safety, I do not big time in not leave ASAP. And it got worse.
